Atrum Materia is a vintage metal band from Helsinki, Finland. We play the classic hard rock songs of Deep Purple, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Uriah Heep, Whitesnake etc.
Band name
Atrum Materia, what the hell is that? Well, my son, most of the matter and energy in the entire Universe is invisible. This missing mass is called dark matter or atrum materia in Latin. You don’t know where it is or what it is, but the scientists have calculated that it’s got to be there somewhere. The physicist of our band, Juha (PhD), came up with the idea that the missing dark energy of the Universum is here, in our band. Where exactly, I’m not sure – it might be in his insanely loud subwoofer, I guess.
Band history
The band was founded as a therapy project for Timo, Juha and Mikko (ex-drummer) in 2007. After experimenting with various singers the band called Pasi in on May 28, 2008.
Dio-oriented Pasi shifted the band’s musical repertoire from progressive old school metal into more melodical classic metal and hard rock with emphasis on powerful vocals. The band has created different set lists for classic hard rock gigs and more danceable hard rock party gigs. We also like to do theme gigs like Atrum Materia Goes Kasari (80’s hard rock).
Busy attorney Mikko had to leave the band in the beginning of 2009, and Niko walked in on April 22, 2009. He was perfectly comfortable with all the material the guys were playing and was hungry for more. Niko decided to quit in August 2011. He was replaced by Samuli in September 2011. As Samuli quit in January 2016, Niko came back but he had to go in May 2016. So, we’re looking for our fourth drummer at the moment.
The band has tried out several hammond players to complete the classic metal band sound. Ahmed, a.k.a. Kari, showed up in June 2009. He really added to the Purple sound, but had to leave the band because of moving his residence too far away from us. Another very good keyboard player Make joined the band in February 2010 and quit after the gig in May 2010. We were glad to have Timo K. with us now since March 2011 until 2012. Make came back in February 2016 as a gig keyboardist, and it’s great to have the Hammond in the band again!
The band’s working title “Dark Sunday” was changed to “Atrum Materia” on June 24, 2009. The first demo was recorded and mixed at the Ukko Studios in June and July 2010. It included four songs: Highway Star (Deep Purple), Catch the Rainbow (Rainbow), Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath) and Heartbreaker (Led Zeppelin).
The band did its first gig at the Paino Bar, Helsinki, on Sep 2009. Since then we’ve been playing in Helsinki, Lappeenranta and Vimpeli, and we’re always looking for new venues to conquer.
