Pasi Kivioja, vocals and guitar

Started to play the guitar: At the age of 15. My first amplifier lacked a distortion knob, so I used a full volume instead. Later I discovered that you can actually buy a separate overdrive effect for your guitar.

Started to sing: More seriously at the age of 24 or 25. I began to take singing lessons as late as at the age of 32. Before that I thought I was a baritone and I never even dreamed about singing the Dio and Zeppelin songs. However, pretty soon I turned out to be a tenor or a tenoral baritone, thanks to my singing teacher Mirka. It was like a miracle for me, because all of sudden I could hit much higher notes than ever before.

I remember when I started in Atrum Materia, my vocal range was about 2,5 octaves or lower. I was struggling with many songs that I can now deal with easily. After four years of practice my vocal range expanded to 3,5 octaves from bass to contralto, so now I’ll tell everyone who claims that he or she can’t sing a certain song, because it goes so high, that yes you can – with hard work you can do it eventually.

The best performance: I played a couple of songs at my grandma’s 90th birthday party. A few years later she couldn’t remember my name anymore, but she said that “You’re the one who sang for me so well, bless you for that”. Now I’ll always know there’s a reason for music.

Would love to play: All the Rainbow stuff – and the blues (if we were a blues band)!

Wouldn’t play: 90’s shit.

Favorite songs: Man on the Silver Mountain (Rainbow), Child in Time (Deep Purple), Holy Diver (Dio), Children of the Sea (Black Sabbath), Babe I’m Gonna Leave You (Led Zeppelin), Still of the Night (Whitesnake), Dream On (Aerosmith, Dio’s version), Fade to Black (Metallica).

Favorite singers: Ronnie James Dio is definitely number one. I also respect David Coverdale, Graham Bonnet and Johnny Gioeli as singers because of the awesome range and tone of their voice.

The best thing about Atrum Materia: It’s so much fun! This is the music I’ve always wanted to play, and I’m proud to play with very good musicians.
